['bɪldə; zu englisch to build »bauen«], Singular Builder der, -s, aus dem Amerikanischen übernommene Bezeichnung für Gerüststoffe, die Waschmitteln zur Verbesserung der Waschwirkung zugesetzt werden, selbst aber nicht grenzflächenaktiv sind. Builder unterstützen die Wirkung von Bleichmitteln und Tensiden und damit den Waschvorgang durch Einstellen eines geeigneten pH-Wertes, durch Wasserenthärtung, Schaumstabilisierung, Emulgierung und Schmutztragevermögen. Viele Jahre war Pentanatriumtriphosphat der bekannteste Builder, seit den 80er-Jahren finden Phosphatersatzstoffe Anwendung. Buildersysteme bestehen aus mehreren Komponenten. In den phosphatfreien Waschmitteln wird meist eine Kombination aus Zeolith A, Soda und Polycarboxylat eingesetzt.
